WEEK 5 - Chapter 3

Challenges exist in companies due to the amount of data created, and continue growing - emails, spreadsheets, forms etc. Including where they are stored and what they are used for.  Companies have to employ strategies to manage the data, for legal and logistic reasons.

 Approaches:

  •   Data Governance - formal processes in the business are designed to handle data in a certain way - such as the Master data management, master data is the core data of the business
  • Data base approach – these are the files of yester year, management of the data created in the company, one set of software connects all the files, so there is a connection between them.  This is based on entity – relationship modelling
  • Data base management systems are the programs used to analyse the relationship between the data
  • Warehouses and data marts which are the queries that run to extract the information efficiently and effectively
